How should screwdriver bits be protected against rust?
Screwdriver bits should be protected against rust through a combination of surface treatment, proper cleaning, moisture control, and protective packaging.
We recommend:
Protective surface treatment: black oxide, phosphate, nickel, chrome, or other anti-corrosion coatings can improve rust resistance
Proper cleaning after heat treatment: oil, scale, chemicals, and residues should be removed before final coating
Anti-rust oil: a light protective oil can be applied for storage and long-distance shipping
Dry packaging: bits should be packed only after they are completely dry
Moisture protection: desiccant or moisture-control materials can be added for humid climates or sea freight
Avoid direct metal-to-metal contact: individual bit slots or trays help reduce scratches that can damage the protective surface
Protect against fingerprints: sweat and salts from handling can accelerate corrosion on exposed steel
Controlled storage: keep finished bits away from high humidity, water, acids, and corrosive chemicals
Salt-spray testing: useful for verifying whether the selected coating meets the agreed corrosion-resistance target
For S2 and CR-V bits, the steel grade alone does not determine rust resistance. Surface treatment and storage conditions are especially important because both materials can corrode if the protective finish is damaged or moisture remains on the surface.
