How should screwdriver bit hardness be inspected?
Screwdriver bit hardness should be inspected by testing the finished bit material with a calibrated hardness tester and comparing the result with the agreed specification.
We recommend checking:
Material type: confirm whether the bit is S2 steel, CR-V, or another specified alloy
Hardness scale: screwdriver bits are commonly checked using the Rockwell C scale (HRC)
Test location: measure on a suitable flat section of the bit, not directly on a very small or irregular tip where the reading may be inaccurate
Surface preparation: remove coatings or surface contamination when necessary so they do not affect the result
Multiple samples: test bits from different production batches rather than only one piece
Multiple readings: take more than one measurement and compare the results for consistency
Heat-treatment consistency: large hardness variation can indicate unstable heat treatment
Post-test inspection: also check for brittleness, cracks, deformation, or tip damage

S2 steel: HRC 58–62
CR-V steel: HRC 52–56
Hardness should not be evaluated alone. A bit that is too soft may wear or deform, while a bit that is too hard may become brittle and chip under load. Tip accuracy, toughness, heat treatment, and fit with the screw should also be inspected.
For OEM orders, buyers should define the material grade, target HRC range, sampling quantity, test method, and acceptance criteria before production.
