Rotary tool runout is tested by measuring how far the rotating shaft, collet, or installed bit moves away from its true centerline. The result is normally recorded as Total Indicator Runout (TIR) in millimeters.

A typical test method is:

Install a precision reference pin or straight test rod in the collet

Fix the rotary tool securely so the body cannot move

Position a dial indicator against the reference pin

Rotate the spindle slowly by hand through 360°

Record the highest and lowest indicator readings

The difference between those readings is the TIR / runout value

For a more complete inspection, runout should be checked at:

Spindle or shaft

Collet or chuck

Reference pin close to the collet

Reference pin farther from the collet to identify angular misalignment

For electric rotary tools, we also recommend checking dynamic vibration at different speeds, because a tool may show acceptable static runout but still vibrate excessively at high RPM.

Low runout is especially important for engraving, grinding, polishing, PCB work, jewelry, nail tools, and other precision applications, because excessive runout can cause vibration, uneven cutting, poor surface finish, faster bearing wear, and accessory damage.

For OEM or wholesale projects, buyers should define the maximum acceptable TIR value, test position, reference pin diameter, and test method before production.
