How is rotary tool runout measured?
Rotary tool runout is measured by checking how far the spindle, collet, or installed test rod moves away from its true rotational centerline. The result is normally expressed as Total Indicator Runout (TIR) in millimeters.
A typical measurement method is:
Secure the rotary tool: fix the tool body so it cannot move during measurement
Install a precision test rod: use a straight, accurately ground reference pin in the collet
Position a dial indicator: place the indicator tip against the test rod
Rotate the spindle slowly through 360°
Record the highest and lowest readings
Calculate TIR: the difference between the maximum and minimum readings is the runout value
Runout should normally be checked at more than one position:
Near the collet: shows spindle and collet accuracy
Farther along the test rod: helps identify angular misalignment
At the spindle itself: useful for separating spindle runout from collet or accessory errors
For mini rotary tools, we also recommend measuring runout with the same collet, test rod diameter, clamping force, and measurement distance for every unit. Otherwise, production results cannot be compared accurately.
Low runout is especially important for engraving, drilling, PCB work, jewelry polishing, and model making, because excessive runout can cause vibration, uneven cutting, poor surface finish, and faster bearing wear.
For ToolQeen rotary tool projects, runout inspection should be combined with collet accuracy, bearing condition, vibration, noise, and high-speed stability testing before mass production approval.
