What causes an electric screwdriver bit to wobble?
An electric screwdriver bit usually wobbles because of runout, poor concentricity, a loose bit holder, a bent bit, or misalignment inside the shaft and gearbox system.
Common causes include:
Bent screwdriver bit: even a small bend can create visible wobble during rotation
Loose bit fit: excessive clearance between the bit and holder reduces stability
Poor bit-holder concentricity: the holder may not rotate on the same centerline as the shaft
Shaft misalignment: a bent or poorly assembled output shaft increases runout
Gearbox misalignment: inaccurate gears, bearings, or assembly can shift the output centerline
Worn bearings: bearing clearance can allow the shaft to move during rotation
Poor machining accuracy: inaccurate bit, shaft, or holder dimensions can increase wobble
Foreign material inside the holder: dirt or metal particles can prevent the bit from seating correctly
Wear after long-term use: repeated side loading or impacts can gradually increase mechanical clearance
To identify the cause, buyers should test the screwdriver with a straight reference bit or precision test rod. If several different bits show the same wobble, the problem is more likely in the holder, shaft, bearing, or gearbox rather than the bit itself.
For precision electronics repair, low wobble is important because it improves bit alignment, screw engagement, control, and protection against screw-head damage.
