What is the difference between Torx and security Torx bits?

Torx and Security Torx bits both use a six-lobe star-shaped profile, but Security Torx is designed for tamper-resistant screws.

The main differences are:

Standard Torx: has a solid six-lobe tip and is used with normal Torx screws

Security Torx: has a small hole in the center of the bit to fit over the center pin inside a tamper-resistant Torx screw

Compatibility: a standard Torx bit cannot normally fit a Security Torx screw because the center pin blocks the bit

Security Torx bits: can often also be used on standard Torx screws of the same size

Applications: Security Torx is common in electronics, appliances, automotive interiors, game consoles, public equipment, and products where unauthorized disassembly should be discouraged

Common sizes include T5, T6, T8, T10, T15, T20, and larger sizes, depending on the application.

For electronics and repair-tool sets, we recommend including both small Torx and Security Torx sizes, because many devices use tamper-resistant screws even when the screw head looks similar to standard Torx.
