What is the difference between Phillips and JIS bits?
Phillips and JIS bits are both cross-head screwdriver bits, but they come from different standards and can fit Japanese screws differently.
The main differences are:
Phillips (PH): the most widely used cross-head profile for general screws worldwide
JIS: traditionally associated with Japanese-made motorcycles, cameras, electronics, machinery, and other equipment
Fit: a JIS-compatible driver can provide a tighter fit in some Japanese cross-head screws, especially older designs
Cam-out: better tip-to-screw engagement helps reduce slipping and screw-head damage

For repair work, the practical rule is simple: choose the bit that seats fully in the screw with minimal play. Do not force a loose-fitting Phillips bit into a Japanese screw simply because both heads look similar.
