What battery shipping documents are needed for electric screwdrivers?
For electric screwdrivers with a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery, the shipment is normally handled as UN3481 – Lithium ion batteries contained in equipment. The exact documents depend on the battery configuration, quantity, transport method, and carrier.
We recommend preparing:
UN38.3 Test Summary: confirms that the battery design has passed the required lithium-battery transport tests. It must be available, although a paper copy does not normally need to travel with every shipment.
Battery specification sheet: battery model, chemistry, voltage, capacity, Wh rating, manufacturer, and cell configuration
Commercial Invoice: product description, quantity, value, HS code, country of origin, and battery information when required
Packing List: carton quantity, weight, dimensions, and packing details
Air Waybill or transport document: should include the required lithium-battery information when applicable
Dangerous Goods Declaration: required only for certain fully regulated lithium-battery shipments; many qualifying Section II shipments do not require a Shipper’s Declaration
SDS/MSDS: may be requested by a carrier, forwarder, or customer, but it does not replace the UN38.3 Test Summary and is not itself a general IATA transport requirement for equipment.
For air shipping, the supplier must also confirm whether the package requires a lithium battery mark, UN3481 marking, specific airway-bill wording, or carrier approval. DHL, for example, may require account pre-approval for lithium-battery shipments.
