How does a reversing ratchet mechanism work?

A reversing ratchet mechanism works by using a gear and pawl system that allows rotation in one direction while locking and transmitting torque in the other.

The main parts usually include:

Ratchet gear: a toothed wheel connected to the screwdriver shaft

Pawl: engages with the gear teeth to transmit torque

Direction selector: changes which side of the pawl engages the gear

Spring: keeps the pawl pressed against the ratchet teeth

When the handle turns in the driving direction, the pawl locks against the gear teeth and transfers torque to the screwdriver shaft.

When the handle moves back, the pawl slides over the teeth and produces the familiar clicking sound without turning the screw backward.

Moving the reversing selector changes the pawl engagement direction, allowing the screwdriver to switch between tightening and loosening.

Some ratchet screwdrivers also include a locked or fixed mode, where the mechanism is disabled and the screwdriver works like a normal manual screwdriver.

For tight-space applications, a finer ratchet gear is useful because it requires a smaller return angle before the next tooth engages. However, finer teeth also require good material strength and accurate machining to maintain torque capacity and durability.

For ToolQeen OEM ratchet screwdriver projects, the mechanism can be evaluated according to the required ratchet angle, torque capacity, backlash, cycle life, selector design, and handle size.
