What is an MSDS or SDS for an electric screwdriver battery?
An MSDS/SDS is a safety data sheet that describes the lithium battery’s chemical composition, hazards, handling precautions, storage requirements, and emergency measures.
MSDS is the older term; SDS (Safety Data Sheet) is the current standard term.
For an electric screwdriver battery, the SDS normally includes:
Battery manufacturer and product identification
Battery chemistry, such as lithium-ion
Hazard classification
Chemical composition
Fire and explosion information
First-aid measures
Safe handling and storage requirements
Accidental damage or leakage procedures
Transport information
Disposal and environmental information
For international shipping, carriers or freight forwarders may request the SDS to understand the battery type and handling requirements.
However, an SDS does not replace the UN38.3 Test Summary. The SDS provides safety information, while UN38.3 confirms that the lithium battery design has passed the required transport tests.
