What happens if the battery model changes after compliance testing?

If the battery model changes after compliance testing, the existing test reports should not automatically be assumed to remain valid. The new battery must be reviewed against the battery originally used for testing.

Buyers should check:

  • Battery manufacturer and model number
  • Chemistry and cell type
  • Voltage and capacity
  • Watt-hour rating
  • Cell configuration
  • Protection circuit / BMS
  • Physical construction and safety design
  • Existing UN38.3 and product compliance reports

For lithium batteries, a change of more than 20% in watt-hours, an increase of more than 20% in voltage, or another change that could materially affect the UN38.3 test results can make the battery a new design type requiring testing.

Even when the change is smaller, the product compliance file should still be reviewed. For EU products, manufacturers are required to consider changes in battery design, characteristics, and production when maintaining conformity.

If only the battery model number changes but the actual cell, construction, specifications, and safety design remain identical, the existing reports may still be usable—but this should be confirmed with the battery supplier or testing laboratory rather than assumed.

For ToolQeen OEM and ODM projects, we recommend locking the battery model before compliance testing and mass production. If a battery must be replaced later, we first compare the new battery specifications and documentation, then determine whether the existing reports can be updated or additional testing is required.
