Does an electric screwdriver need CE documentation for Europe?

Yes. An electric screwdriver sold in the EU normally needs CE compliance documentation before it is placed on the market. CE marking is not simply a certificate; the manufacturer must identify the applicable EU legislation, complete the conformity assessment, prepare technical documentation, issue an EU Declaration of Conformity (DoC), and then affix the CE mark.

For a typical rechargeable electric screwdriver, buyers should normally check:

EU Declaration of Conformity

Technical documentation

EMC compliance/testing

RoHS compliance

Applicable product safety or machinery requirements

Battery compliance documentation

CE marking on the product or label

Model number matching the actual production unit

As of 2026, powered screwdrivers may fall under the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC depending on their design and intended use. The new Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 applies from 20 January 2027, so products placed on the EU market after that date must be evaluated under the new framework where applicable.

For low-voltage rechargeable precision screwdrivers, the screwdriver itself may fall outside the Low Voltage Directive because that directive applies from 50–1,000 V AC or 75–1,500 V DC. However, a mains charger or power adapter supplied with the product may separately fall within the LVD scope.

For OEM orders, buyers should make sure the CE documentation matches the actual model, battery, motor, PCB, charging circuit, materials, and specifications used in mass production. A CE report or Declaration of Conformity for a similar or older screwdriver model should not automatically be assumed to cover the new product.

For ToolQeen electric screwdriver projects, we recommend confirming the final product specification, battery, PCB, motor, model number, destination market, and packaging information before compliance testing, so the CE documentation matches the product that will actually be shipped.
