What torque rating should a ratchet screwdriver have?
The right torque rating for a ratchet screwdriver depends on the application. For most general-purpose 1/4-inch ratchet screwdriver sets, the mechanism should safely handle at least 10–20 N·m without slipping or permanent damage.
A practical guide is:
Precision and electronics work: around 2–5 N·m is usually sufficient
Household, appliance, and general repair: around 10–20 N·m is a good target
Heavy-duty mechanical work: 20 N·m or higher may be required
When sourcing a ratchet screwdriver, buyers should check more than the maximum torque rating:
Ratchet mechanism strength
Gear and pawl material
Bit and shaft strength
Handle-to-shaft connection
Slipping or skipping under load
Backlash after repeated use
Forward and reverse torque performance
Cycle durability under working torque
